Nationwide Domestic Violence

Sexual Assault Hotline:

1-800-799-SAFE (7233)

The Omaha Police Domestic Violence Squad has been developed to provide a timely and appropriate response to domestic violence. Our goal is to help lessen the impact the crime has on you. We care about you.

We know that the court process can be very confusing and overwhelming. For that reason, we have outlined the basic steps of the Criminal Justice System as it applies to domestic violence. We would like to answer your questions and help you understand the different phases which may occur in your case.

Throughout the process, there will be other agencies that will be available to you in assisting your needs. Two of these agencies include the Omaha-Douglas County Victim Assistance Unit and the WCA - Women's Center For Advancement. In addition, we have included other information and referrals for services that you may find helpful.

Please let us know if you have any special needs or concerns. We would be glad to assist you in meeting those needs.

Also, if you are being intimidated, harassed, or stalked by the person accused of a crime against you, contact "911" immediately.

In addition, all City of Omaha fire stations are available as "safe houses" for immediate protection prior to police arrival. Your safety is of the utmost importance to us.

If you have any questions at all, please contact the Domestic Violence Squad at (402) 444-5825.

Because domestic violence is a serious offense and affects so many victims every year, the Omaha Police Department has taken steps to encourage the arrests in domestic violence situations. This is done in the interest of the victims to ensure that they are directed to available resources and services.

It is important that victims understand the process that follows a "911" call in a domestic situation and what can be expected of the responding police.

Once the police respond to a domestic disturbance and a report is filed, the Domestic Violence Squad continues the investigation and works with the court system to determine if an arrest can be made.

Victims cannot press charges, drop charges, or obtain a warrant through the Douglas County Attorney's office. This will be handled through the investigation process.

The efforts of the Omaha Police Department's Domestic Violence Squad are designed to decrease the burden on victims when trying to prosecute perpetrators of domestic violence, and to encourage the arrest and conviction of those perpetrators.
