Students enrolled in college or university programs in the following areas are eligible for unpaid internships with the Omaha Police Department.

Aviation                                        Journalism

Criminal Justice                             Psychology

Forensics                                      Social Work

Geography                                    Sociology


An OPD internship provides a positive and safe learning environment where students experience the various aspects and responsibilities of municipal law enforcement. Interns work on operational, administrative, and support functions while under the supervision of capable and knowledgeable employees in each assigned unit.

Intern assignments may include the following areas:

Air Support                                   Domestic Violence

Auto Theft                                    Homicide/Robbery

Burglary/Fraud                              Public Information Office

Crime Analysis                              Training Academy

Crime Lab                                     Victim Assistance

Crime Prevention Unit                    Youth Services Unit

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled at an accredited college/university

  • Have a junior or senior standing or completion of 2/3 credits for a degree in a two year or post-graduate program

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4 point scale.

  3. Intern Agreement Form

  4. Professional Resume

  5. Intern Statement of Confidentiality and Waiver Form

  6. Ride-along Release

  7. Letter of Recommendation

  8. Emergency Data Sheet

  9. Official Transcript

  10. Include a photocopy of your driver's license

Background checks and personal interviews are conducted after all materials are received. Assignments are based on skills, interest, and need. They are limited in number.
